Reps Elected to Serve on Enbridge Advisory Board
March 31 2010 | News Articles | Kitimat Northern Sentinel
Councillor Randy Halyk and Mayor Joanne Monaghan were chosen by their peers to represent Kitimat on the Northern Gateway Marine Community Advisory Board.
The board is an extension of the Community Advisory Board process facilitated by Enbridge last year.
There will be four meetings per year with working group conference calls between meetings. Areas of emphasis are environmental, social, economic and cultural.
“This in no way should be construed as us agreeing to Enbridge or not,” said Halyk. “It’s basically a way for us to stay up on what’s going on.”
The mayor added that she would make up her mind about the project following environmental reviews.
Halyk was also voted to attend a shipping seminar in Prince Rupert on Wednesday, April 21 to learn about the history of shipping and trade development, vessel types, legal matters and more.
“What we need to do is learn as much as we can about shipping,” he said.
“There are some shipping industries here already and I believe we have potential to grow shipping in Kitimat.”
“To know all we can is important.”
