Pipeline Opponents Called to Action

AN ENVIRONMENTAL group wants a packed house tomorrow night when a lawyer for another environmental group speaks to the Kitimat-Stikine regional district about Enbridge’s plan to build a $4.5 billion pipeline from Alberta to an export terminal at Kitimat.
Pembina Institute lawyer Karen Campbell is speaking at the invitation of regional district directors, says the Friends of Wild Salmon.
“It is important that we fill the room with wild salmon supporters,” says a broadcast email from the Friends.
“As concerned citizens, we need to educate ourselves, support Karen and show our elected representatives at the regional district that northerners won’t stand for this kind of risky development,” it continues.
Enbridge has spent the last years compiling its application for environmental and regulatory approval and is about to file its submission to federal authorities.
But the company has come under increasing criticism for its plan with detractors saying the economic benefit does not outweigh potential environmental damage from either pipeline spills or tanker accidents.
Environmental groups are also unhappy about the decision to use a body called a joint review panel to evaluate the project, saying it isn’t rigorous enough.
