Mount Milligan Gold-Copper Mine Project
Environmental Assessment to Continue as a Comprehensive Study
OTTAWA – May 15, 2009 – Canada’s Environment Minister Jim Prentice announced today that a comprehensive study is the most appropriate type of environmental assessment for the proposed Mount Milligan Gold-Copper Mine Project, located between Fort St. James and Mackenzie, in north-central British Columbia.
The Minister based his decision on the report and recommendation submitted by the responsible authorities, Fisheries and Oceans Canada and Natural Resources Canada. The report contains information on the scope of the project, the factors to be considered in the environmental assessment and the scope of those factors, public comments in relation to the project, the potential of the project to cause adverse environmental effects and the ability of the comprehensive study to address issues relating to the project.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada and Natural Resources Canada will now continue the comprehensive study of the proposed Mount Milligan Gold-Copper Mine Project. A comprehensive study report will be submitted to the Minister of the Environment. At that time the public will be given an opportunity to comment on the findings and recommendations of the report before the Minister renders his final decision.
Terrane Metals Corporation proposes to develop a gold-copper mine at Mount Milligan that will process 60,000 tonnes per day of ore. The mining complex will consist of the mine pit, process plant, tailings impoundment area and dams, water intake and diversion systems, on-site mine haul roads, explosives factory and magazine facilities, and other associated mine buildings and infrastructure. The proposed development includes a 92-km transmission line and upgrade of the 29-km access road to the site.
Further information on this project is available in the Canadian Environmental Assessment Registry under reference number 08-03-39778.
The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency administers the federal environmental assessment process, which identifies the environmental effects of proposed projects and measures to address those effects, in support of sustainable development.
