Randy Hawes will be spending more time in Victoria and travelling around the province during his third term as a Liberal MLA.

Yesterday afternoon, Premier Gordon Campbell announced his government’s new cabinet, which included Hawes as the minister of state for mining. Hawes is also a member of the Environment and Land Use Committee.

He is one of nine new cabinet members.

Under his portfolio, Hawes will manage mining exploration and gravel extraction. It is a sub-ministry of the ministry of energy, mines and petroleum resources, which mostly oversees natural resources.

Hawes told The Record shortly after the announcements were made he enjoyed being the government whip the last four years, and he’s looking forward to the new challenge ahead.

“Mining is a huge thing,” said Hawes. “Through the 1990s it was neglected and mining revenues fell. Now, it’s a part of the province’s overall financial structure,” and it has the potential to grow.

Part of Hawes’ job is to see that the industry advances.

Hawes says his work with the aggregate industry over the past few years will be helpful with his new portfolio.

“Aggregate is not a huge money-maker for the province itself, but it’s a cost savings and boost for the economy,” Hawes noted. The price of everything will increase if there isn’t a good supply of reasonably priced aggregate, he added.

Hawes is familiarizing himself with the ministry and will be receiving a briefing next week.

“The members of this executive council are proven leaders and, like all of their caucus colleagues, are ready to roll up their sleeves and get to work immediately to build a stronger province,” said Campbell.
