Western Mining Action Network Conference Announcement

    Date: Friday, Oct 02 - Oct 04

    Location: Rapid City, South Dakota

    Venue: Alex Johnson Hotel

    Description:

Western Mining Action Network Conference Announcement
“COMMUNITIES TOGETHER: CULTIVATING A CLIMATE OF CHANGE”

The Western Mining Action Network (WMAN) is pleased to announce that it will be holding its seventh bi-annual gathering of people from across Canada and the U.S. who work on mining issues.

When:  Friday, October 2, to Sunday, October 4, 2009
Optional mine tour on October 1, 2009.

Where:  Rapid City, South Dakota (Alex Johnson Hotel)

    Fee:  $60 U.S.
This registration fee helps cover the cost of accommodations and most meals.  Participants pay their travel costs.  Some travel subsidies will be available. Your ability to pay helps others attend on scholarships.

WMAN gatherings provide an excellent venue for information sharing, networking, learning, and strategizing.  Participants have the opportunity to meet a wide array of people working on mining issues; participate in training workshops and large- and small-group discussions; share their stories; and, if interested, go on a mine tour on Thursday, October 1.

The WMAN Steering Committee is working to finalize presenters and panel discussion sessions.  A final agenda will be available later this summer.

The theme of the 2009 WMAN conference is “Communities Together: Cultivating a Climate of Change.” Consistent with that theme, the 2009 conference will feature a wide variety of panel and discussion topics around issues of community action, working together, and mining and climate change.  For example, the conference will include workshops that address using new media, health issues, cross-cultural connections, and various aspects of energy minerals.  The conference will also include sessions on “What Brings us Together: Strength in Community” and “Mining and Sacred Sites.” As in past years, the 2009 conference will provide technical support and training sessions.

For additional information and presentations from past conferences, check out WMAN’s website: http://www.wman-info.org.  Click on “Resources.”

    PARTICIPANT APPLICATION PROCESS
Over the past several years, WMAN has increased in numbers and diversity.  As the membership base has grown, so has the size of the conference (from 60 participants in 1997 to 160 in 2009).  To ensure we can accommodate all who wish to attend, we will continue to use an application process.
    We are looking for applicants:
    • who are or have been directly or indirectly affected by hardrock, coal and uranium mining, OR
    • who are residents in communities that are dealing with mining related issues (e.g., mine proposals, community health, mine site reclamation) OR
    • who work on issues related to mining (e.g., health, socio-economic, legal, labor, environment)

TO APPLY:  Send your name, full contact information, and a sentence or two about the mining issues you are involved with.  Please submit your application by July 17, 2009.
    Send your application to:

Please let us know if you are interested in a travel subsidy.  We ask that participants make every effort to fund their own travel.  Notification of travel subsidy awards will be completed by August 1.

If you have any questions, please call Lilias Jarding, Conference Organizer, at (970) 412-1924 or contact the gmail address listed above.

The conference has always been a useful way to reach out to new individuals and groups.  Thus, we’d like to encourage folks to pass on to us the names of others who may be interested in attending this conference.

    IMPORTANT TRAVEL NOTICE:
Note on US immigration:  To enter the U.S. and to re-enter Canada by air, participants from Canada will require a valid passport.
